Kristin McGee, aka @thebendigirl is a very well known Yoga & Pilates instructor, here in NYC & all over the world. You can find her on DVD’s, in magazines like Health & Pilates Style, and now you can even download her onto your smart phone!

Needless to say, we were thrilled to have her come to class when we first opened, and she has since become a huge fan… So huge in fact that she took the time to give us a great write up on her blog, Flex in the City: http://www.kristinmcgee.com/yoga/?p=7559

We are honored to have her call us her “new favorite workout!”

If you aren’t familiar with Kristin, you should definitely look her up… On top of her professional credentials, she is quite possibly one of the nicest & most positive people I have ever met. It’s been a pleasure to have her in the studio.

Thanks Kristin! See you soon!

Pilates ProWorks named one of Vogue’s Top Workouts!

Keep That Momentum Going! Smoothie Style!

While it’s important to stay active and on your feet, what’s in your stomach counts for a lot too. At Pilates ProWorks, we try to stress the necessity of keeping your whole body in health, and nutrition is right up there with all those lunges and squats. The average American diet consists of highly processed foods loaded with way too much salt, sugar, and fat. One of the fastest and easiest ways to control that is with a smoothie! Smoothie recipes are incredibly versatile. What makes them so useful is that you can control what ingredients and how much of them you put in. Also, whether you’re a chocolate-aholic or a fruity freak, the combinations are endless and more often than not, they come out delicious! If your goal is to shed excess pounds, you can make a healthy low-calorie weight loss smoothie.

When making your own smoothie, you can choose to add whole fruits and minimize the sweetness. That extra fiber from the fruits will make you feel and stay full. Fiber helps to aid the release of sugar into the blood, resulting in a more stable blood sugar level. You also have the option to add low fat milk (almond/rice/oat are also great alternatives), yogurt, protein powder, wheat germ, spirulina and other healthy ingredients.

Here’s a quick and easy vegan smoothie, inspired by some of our clientele here at Pilates ProWorks Financial District!

Vegan Brown Rice Banana Smoothie

2 cups rice milk (home made brown/milled)
bananas (organic frozen really ripe)
2 tbps honey (raw, taste)
1 tsp natural vanilla extract
1 pinch sea salt (celtic)

Blend it all together and voila! You’re all set for a healthy boost to your body!  Perfect for right before or after a tough workout, right? :)

Wondering Why Pilates is Good for Everyone?

It seems like the NYC Pilates ProWorks has been gaining fans everywhere! Whether you be a newbie or a seasoned vet, the benefits of pilates are endless. Health journalist Alyssa Sparacino recently paid a visit to Pilates ProWork’s new NYC studio and ended up singing its praises. As an active gym and fitness member, Alyssa was concerned that pilates wouldn’t provide enough challenge to her already rigorous workout routine. She was pleasantly surprised, saying,

“The class size was just right—full, it held 12 people—and the pace was perfect. The instructor quickly explained each move, which we performed for one minute (other classes may be structured differently). It was enough time to really feel the burn, maintain momentum, and keep things interesting.”

Pilates ProWorks, unlike the numerous traditional pilates gyms out there, sets out to provide a unique workout that pays homage to the traditional, as well as bumping up the heart rate and adding contemporary flair. The main advantage of pilates is its effectiveness, aiming to improve one’s balance, flexibility, strength, and awareness of the body. All of these skills are a key component to keeping oneself fit, and continuing to challenge the strength one has improved upon.

Susan continues her praise of Pilates Proworks by cheerfully stating,

“After only a few minutes, I knew I was going to be a fan. Before the class, I worried I wouldn’t break a sweat. Wrong! The 55-minute routine required power and concentration to get the moves right, and there were some serious bursts of cardio incorporated, too. I felt like I was working hard, but in a different way than I’m used to at the gym, which was refreshing.

The workout allowed me to really pinpoint the areas of my body that were stronger than others. For instance, I felt more confident when the focus was on my abs and obliques rather than my hamstrings or abductors (the muscles on the outside of the thigh). Instead of feeling weak and frustrated, I found myself setting a personal goal to get stronger. That’s the amazing thing about Pilates—I find it to be a peaceful workout, but I feel such a surge of adrenaline to work harder, push more—one…more…rep.”

Suitable for any fitness level and any age, instructors at Pilates ProWorks work hard everyday to customize their workout so that everyone  can meet their fitness goals and achieve a healthy and sound mind!

Beat Science

BEAT SCIENCE

Hey you! Yeah, you. You’ve got rhythm and you know it. When was the last time you cranked up the music and felt just a bit funkier than usual– in your lonesome? When was the last time you caught yourself walking the city streets to the beat of your iPhone tunes?

I’m talking about Beat Science. I’m talking about the moments music hits you… the moments music resonates within you and drives you to put an extra pep in your step or edge to your already sassy mood. Let’s take that and allow it to fuel your workout! At BarrePro, we take pride in the music we pump through our speakers.

Keeping It Fresh.
You’ve probably discovered by now that we in BarrePro change our playlist every week. You’ll find anything from a current top-of-the-charts hit to that Michael Jackson song you forgot you adore! Each instructor designs their playlist- so you’ll never hear the same playlist twice.

Song Selection: Intensity. Mood. Tempo. Length.
These are all things we consider when creating a playlist. That’s right, you’re not just exercising… you’re working out to a calculated playlist! Every song has been chosen to set the mood for the exercise– from the pace of the music, to the length of the song, to the energy it gives you! For example, Leg Work: Yes, you’re lunging to a heavy beat this week… drop it low / get down! {song selection: Nicki Minaj- Moment 4 Life}. Another example: Your last song of the class (and Abdominal Work)– it’s an uplifting, inspiring, once-world cup theme song with the “umph” to get you through your final push of class {song selection: K’Naan- Wavin’ Flag}.

The Music plays a large part in that surge of energy you feel halfway through the class or that chill vibe you get as you bust out your ab work on the small ball. It’s all thought out AND it’s all for YOU!
After your BarrePro class, you may just finding yourself walking the NYC streets to the BEAT of your music. You’ve got rhythm and you know it! ; )

It’s Easy Being Green…

Well, eating green anyway, with the Union Square Greenmarket just a block and a half away from the NY Studio!

Farmers Market NYC

And with Spring right around the corner-one week away to be exact- there is certainly an abundance of green to be found at the market!

Farmers Market NYC

Check out all these Spring veggies all representing various shades of green :

Artichokes
Asparagus
Brussels Sprouts (my personal fav)
Cabbage
Green Beans
Lettuce
Peas
Scallions
Leeks
Spinach
Watercress

PLUS, all the other other Spring produce that may not be green in color, but are certainly green as in fresh & healthy:

Mushrooms
Radishes
Strawberries
Rhubarb
Apricots

Shopping at your local Farmer’s Market is one of the best things you can do for your body, not to mention the planet… And like I said, you are already in the neighborhood, so why wouldn’t you take advantage of it? I can’t think of a better way to compliment your Proworks sweat sessions than filling your body with fresh fruits & veggies.  As we all know, exercise is only one part of the equation. Diet is just as important for revealing those long lean muscles you are sculpting in class.  It’s a simple equation really:

FitFormer + Farmers Market = One Healthy & Happy (not to mention HOT) Body.

If you need some ideas for what to do with all your beautiful green produce once you get it home…  check out this list of Healthy Spring Recipes from one of my favorite meal planning resources, Eating Well. Happy shopping & enjoy!

See you in class…
